If you smell gas, leave the area and call from a safe distance. Vicksburg’s gas utility lists 601-636-1096 for gas emergencies. Do not use a phone in the odor area, operate electrical switches or light a flame. Do not delay leaving to take photographs or collect permit records. The City’s Gas Distribution instructions are the emergency source; 911 is also the City’s emergency route.
A planned gas-test inspection is a different service. The appointment request below is for routine permitted work, not a suspected leak.
Choose the call by the problem—not by the paperwork
- Gas odor or a suspected leak: leave and use the emergency route above. A contractor’s test appointment does not replace that call.
- Routine gas-test inspection on a permitted project: contact Building Inspections at 601-634-4528. Its office is at 805 South Street, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Building Inspections
- A question about opening or transferring a City utility account: use the Water and Gas Office’s ordinary 601-636-3414 contact. That office separately lists 601-636-1096 for emergency dispatch. Water and Gas Office
Do not tamper with a meter the utility has tagged and shut off. The gas department restricts operation of its distribution valves to authorized, trained personnel. If you cannot evacuate, tell the emergency dispatcher that you need assistance. City gas-safety instructions
Prepare a routine inspection request
The City inspection page includes gas tests among inspections selected according to the permitted scope. It requests the inspection type, relevant permit numbers, preferred date and time, location and contractor’s name. Allow at least 24 hours between requesting and inspection; this published minimum is not a promise of an appointment at your preferred time.
Use this LSL preparation slip when speaking with the office or contractor:
Routine request—not an emergency report. I am requesting [inspection type] for permit [number(s)] at [site address], with contractor [name]. Our preferred appointment is [date and time]. Which appointment can the office confirm, and what must be ready for this inspection?
The bracketed wording is an editorial aid, not an official form or a request submitted by LSL. Ask the office to resolve an unclear inspection type before treating a calendar entry as confirmation.
After the inspector visits
The inspector marks pass or fail on the inspection card issued with the permit. Read the entry for the specific inspection performed. A scheduled visit alone does not provide that result. City inspection procedure
For a project that also needs utility service action, ask separate questions:
- To the inspection office: What result is recorded, and does this permitted work need further inspection or correction?
- To the utility: What service action remains, and who is authorized to perform it?
Those are LSL’s handoff questions, not a claim that the City requires a particular release document. The inspection overview does not specify a gas-test pressure, test duration or utility activation procedure. This guide therefore supplies no DIY testing instructions and does not treat a passed inspection as permission to operate the meter.
For ordinary account setup, see our separate Vicksburg water and gas service guide.
Why these contacts—and what was checked
LSL compared the four linked City pages on September 13, 2026. The Action Line FAQ includes a different gas-leak number; this guide selects the emergency number stated directly by Gas Distribution and corroborated by the Water and Gas Office, while retaining 911. We did not call or test any phone line.
The contribution is a problem-based contact comparison, a routine-request slip and two distinct post-inspection questions. No emergency response, property inspection, utility activation or contractor interview was observed. This is City-system guidance, not a service-territory determination for every address with a Vicksburg mailing address.
