For a Vicksburg home project, a contractor’s license, City trade record and project permit answer different questions. Start by matching the company on the proposal to its Mississippi record. Then ask Vicksburg about the local requirements for that role and scope. Neither check is a rating of workmanship.
Search the actual contracting name
The MSBOC search accepts a name or license number. For a number search, its instructions say to enter numbers without letter prefixes or suffixes. Save the identity and date of the record you checked; ask the Board about an unclear or conflicting result rather than assuming a similarly named business is the one on your proposal.
Before searching, obtain three items from the proposed contractor: the legal contracting name, the license number and the work it will undertake. A photograph of a license issued to someone else does not complete that match.
The State’s residential categories are not interchangeable
The MSBOC FAQ lists State licensing for new residential construction over $50,000, remodeling or additions over $10,000, and residential roofing over $10,000. It separately requires licensing for residential electrical, mechanical, HVAC and plumbing subcontractors. Do not apply the general remodeling dollar threshold as a blanket trade exemption.
The same FAQ distinguishes an inactive license from one eligible for work: inactive holders cannot bid, contract, obtain permits or perform work. A record that can be renewed is not necessarily current authorization. Call MSBOC at 601-354-6161 if the class, scope or status is uncertain.
Ask Vicksburg the question that the State search cannot answer
The City’s contractor page describes State-compliance verification before permitting, local license transfer for plumbing/electrical/mechanical contractors, and a $5,000 surety bond for the named contractor groups. Its $25 annual renewal statement applies specifically to people who passed the written examination in Vicksburg; it is not a universal transfer quote.

Record the response and who provided it. These are LSL’s verification prompts, not additional City application requirements. The bond’s face amount is not a promised payment to a homeowner, a workmanship guarantee or the premium the contractor paid.
Hiring checks do not close the job
After work is permitted, ask for the permit identifying your address and scope. Inspection results are a later check: the City inspection page describes a pass/fail entry on the permit’s inspection card and at least 24 hours’ notice for an inspection request. A contractor’s credential cannot stand in for that result.

LSL compared the current City contractor and inspection pages with MSBOC’s relevant FAQ sections on September 13, 2026. Search instructions were visible in the indexed official result, but the live search presented a security-verification screen during our review; we did not test a contractor lookup. Use the Board’s phone alternative if the service is unavailable to you. We created the call sheet to expose mismatched names, roles and records before hiring. No contractor was contacted, investigated or endorsed, and no private bond or project file was checked. City requirements do not automatically govern an address outside Vicksburg in Warren County.
