Opening a Vicksburg utility account and transferring an existing one have different costs. New-account deposits are $105 for homeowners and $150 for renters; an address transfer requires payment of the current bill plus a $20 fee. These are the City’s published starting amounts, not an estimate of every charge at a particular property. Water and Gas Office
What to bring—and what the amount means
| Your transaction | Published documents or condition | Starting amount |
|---|---|---|
| Homeowner opening an account | Photo ID and deed or purchase contract | $105 deposit |
| Renter opening an account | Photo ID and lease or landlord’s rent receipt | $150 deposit |
| Existing customer transferring service | Visit the office with the new address; pay the current bill | $20 transfer fee, plus that account’s balance |
The deposit difference is $150 − $105 = $45, calculated by LSL. A deposit is not a monthly service rate. Nor should the transfer fee automatically be added to a new-account deposit: the City describes different transactions. Account requirements
Use these three questions when discussing a move with the office:
- Is this a new account or a transfer of my existing account?
- Which services and any inspection or field work apply at the new address?
- What happens to my old account, its balance and its deposit?
The last two answers depend on the account and property; they cannot be calculated from the published deposit amounts.
The new-account desk has a midday break
Go to 2111 Drummond Street. The new-account FAQ gives Monday–Friday hours of 8 a.m.–1 p.m. and 2:30–4:30 p.m., narrower than the office’s general 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. hours. Call 601-636-3414 before making a time-critical trip. The City describes same-day service as available when the deposit is paid before 1 p.m.; ask whether your application and address are ready rather than treating payment as a guaranteed turn-on appointment. Office and account-opening FAQ
Keep the application private
The residential application separates customer information from office-use entries for inspection, transfer status, deposits and containers. An uncompleted office-use box is not proof that an inspection is unnecessary. Ask the representative to explain any outstanding requirement.
The form requests sensitive identity and household information. Use the submission route confirmed by the City; do not put a completed copy in a public service request or a contractor’s shared job folder. A moving checklist needs the receipt/reference and requested service date, not copies of Social Security or driver’s-license numbers.
Bill payment is a separate task
For an existing bill, the City payment-options page links the online portal, which uses the account number and billing ZIP code. It also lists telephone payment at 601-801-3800 and a $1 convenience fee for online or telephone payments. Start from that City page, not an advertisement for a payment service.
A successful bill payment does not confirm that service at the new address is active. Before relying on it for moving day, obtain the City’s answer about the service date and any unfinished work. After the move, check that the bill names the intended service address.
How this comparison was made
LSL compared the City’s account FAQ, residential form and payment instructions on September 13, 2026. The transaction comparison and $45 subtraction are LSL’s work; no account application, payment or service request was submitted. Confirm current requirements with the office before your visit.
