Separate three checks before the handoff

Do not fill a gap in one column with a favorable result from another. If a VIN, name or lien entry differs, identify the discrepancy for the responsible office before assuming the transaction is ready.
Hillsborough’s Florida-title checklist
The Tax Collector’s transfer page calls for a title completed by buyer and seller, including names, signatures, purchase date and price, and applicable odometer information. Each applicant or appointed power of attorney must attend; the appointment document and acceptable identification matter. Its identification rules include additional conditions for foreign passports, so do not reduce the list to “bring any passport.”
Recording a lien needs lienholder information. Buying a plate requires Florida insurance evidence; transferring a plate requires the applicable previous registration or plate/decal information. Taxes and fees are separate from checking the state record.
An out-of-state title is a different intake branch
The same official page separately addresses out-of-state vehicles, financed or leased vehicles and imports. Its out-of-state route includes VIN verification; a financed title held elsewhere requires the linked lien instructions. Use that branch rather than treating the Florida-title checklist as universal. Imported vehicles have further ownership and federal-document requirements not reproduced here.
