Vicksburg’s posted garbage instructions do not fully agree. The Important Waste Management Collection Notice says waste must fit inside one City cart per residence per collection. Other City handouts describe extra carts and material beside the cart. Confirm the rule for your address and material before setting out bulky items or overflow.
Call Action Line at 601-801-3411 for collection routing. For cart-account charges, contact Water and Gas at 601-636-3414. These are the current numbers on the Action Line page and Refuse Rates page; the handouts print a different Action Line number.
The conflicts worth mentioning when you call
| Question | One City source says | Another says |
|---|---|---|
| Can I use another cart? | Current collection notice: one cart; extra receptacles are not collected | Rates page: one additional brown cart for $27.50 |
| What time must material be out? | Garbage notice PDF: 6 a.m. | Collection-rules PDF: 7 a.m. |
| How far from the curb? | Garbage notice PDF: at least five feet | Collection-rules PDF: within five feet; this agrees with Code §11-79 |
Sources: collection notice, rates, garbage notice PDF and collection-rules PDF. LSL has not established their relative effective dates. This table identifies contradictions; it does not select an override based on webpage format or an unexplained filename.
The current codified Chapter 11, checked in its August 14, 2026 edition, provides a firmer reference: §11-79 says within five feet of the curb, not in the street, no earlier than 6 p.m. the preceding day, and removal within 24 hours after collection. Section 11-101 permits one additional residential cart and lists $38.11 plus $31.61 monthly, not the rate webpage’s older amounts. Section 11-102 allows collection administration to change by Board order or resolution; ask for the current address-specific collection instructions if the notice conflicts.
Sort the material before requesting pickup
The following comparison preserves useful distinctions in the collection-rules handout. Because it conflicts with the one-cart notice, its special set-out arrangements require confirmation, not automatic reliance.
| Material | Handout’s distinction | Ask before setting it out |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary household refuse | Goes in the City cart | Which collection days serve this address? |
| Bagged leaves | Describes a five-bag allowance on the second weekly collection day and a separate leaf season | Is overflow currently accepted, and what season dates apply? |
| Small branches | Describes tied bundles with length/weight limits | Which size, quantity and set-out instructions are currently accepted? |
| Bulky household items | Describes a two-cubic-yard limit on the second pickup day | Is this item accepted, and does it need a request? |
| Mattress and box spring | Describes keeping the pair together | Is that arrangement currently collected at this address? |
| Large appliances | Routes a special collection through Action Line | What item-specific preparation and appointment are required? |
| Contractor-generated tree debris | Assigns removal to the contractor | Does the contractor’s written price include removal? |
| Building or renovation material | Assigns disposal to the resident or contractor | Which lawful disposal route accepts this exact material? |
Do not infer that an unlisted chemical, paint, oil, hot ash or construction waste can go in a household cart. The garbage notice PDF expressly excludes several hazardous and construction materials. This guide does not identify a verified disposal facility for them.
Make one useful request
For a non-emergency, the City’s Request for Service form asks for contact/location details, a request type and a description. It expressly prohibits emergency reports. Its stated weekday response hours differ from its sidebar office hours; neither is a promised pickup appointment.
Use this short request as a starting point:
At [service address], I need to dispose of [material, approximate quantity and dimensions]. It was generated by [household or contractor]. Is City collection available? If so, please confirm the day, container/set-out rule and whether a scheduled request is required.
Keep the City’s answer with the request reference. If it says a private disposal route is required, ask for an appropriate official referral rather than leaving the material at the curb indefinitely.
How LSL compared the instructions
LSL read the posted notices, rates, handout, contact page and actual request form on September 13, 2026. The material comparison and confirmation request are LSL’s work. No collection request was submitted, pickup observed or conflicting rule resolved by City staff. The former standalone material-router article has been consolidated here because it duplicated this reader task without delivering another useful route.
