Used motor oil, antifreeze, gasoline, batteries, and tires do not share one Tampa Bay disposal rule. Hillsborough and Pinellas run different systems, and each county separates automotive fluids from at least some solid automotive items. Start with the county that serves the household, then identify the item before choosing a facility.

Vehicle batteries are not interchangeable with small rechargeables
Hillsborough lists lead-acid car, motorcycle and boat batteries in its HHW program. Its Community Collection Centers also list batteries for any County resident with photo ID.
Pinellas HHW, by contrast, expressly excludes large car and boat batteries, including large non-sealed lead-acid and deep-cycle lithium marine batteries. Its acceptance of small sealed lead-acid and other rechargeables does not authorize those vehicle batteries. Hillsborough splits fluids and tires
Hillsborough’s HHW page lists antifreeze or coolant, motor oil, gasoline, diesel, and several automotive cleaning or maintenance products. It also sets a residential boundary and calls for identification showing a Hillsborough address. For gasoline/diesel, it specifies a maximum of one five-gallon container. Confirm the collection day before loading: HHW events do not share every Community Collection Center’s weekday hours.
Tires belong in a different record. The Community Collection Centers page publishes customer eligibility and a twelve-tire annual allowance. It directs excess tires to the Southeast County Landfill with disposal charges. Tire eligibility requires County Solid Waste customer status, photo ID and the property-tax record; the broader battery drop-off eligibility does not remove that customer check. Do not use the tire allowance as a fluid limit or assume that an HHW event accepts tires.
For a Hillsborough trip card, record:
- the complete item label and whether the container leaks;
- household address evidence;
- estimated quantity or tire count;
- the named facility or event and operating date; and
- the County instruction used for packing and transport.
Pinellas publishes item-specific limits
Pinellas’ HHW collection page publishes different per-vehicle/day limits for used oil, antifreeze, and fuels. The limits are five gallons each for oil and antifreeze, and two five-gallon DOT fuel containers total, per vehicle per day. That makes “one container” an incomplete description: identify the material and total amount.
The County’s disposal-complex page handles tires separately and distinguishes size and preparation categories. Up to four tires use the applicable disposal or flat fee; a load containing five or more tires must weigh in and out. On September 21, the page still listed $180 per ton and announced $210 per ton from October 1. Its notice begins with a pending-Board-approval qualification. Confirm the adopted rate and travel date before treating that announcement as a final quote; LSL did not independently inspect the Board’s action.
A Pinellas destination card should identify whether the selected site is an HHW location or the Solid Waste Disposal Complex. A result from one does not establish acceptance at the other.
Stop when the item does not fit the public page
Do not guess when a material is unmarked, mixed, leaking, unusually large, generated by a business, or absent from the accepted list. Contact the county using the live page and keep the written answer with the item record. Never combine substances to fit a category.
Retail battery or oil take-back can be useful, but it is a separate commercial route with its own current conditions. This comparison does not name businesses or treat a retail option as guaranteed capacity.

Local Service Ledger rechecked the complete operative text of two Hillsborough and two Pinellas government records on September 21, 2026. The comparison now expressly separates large vehicle batteries from accepted small batteries and current tire fees from an announced change. We normalized resident eligibility, item class, quantity, facility, preparation, and retained evidence. We did not transport material, test a container, confirm same-day facility operations, or calculate a final fee.
