A Middleburg Heights deck application needs two kinds of drawings: where the deck sits on the lot and how it will be built. Keep the approved revision with the issued permit and subsequent inspection results; a submitted drawing is not an approval.

Assemble the location and construction sheets

The currently linked deck requirements ask for lot measurements, the house’s length and width, deck dimensions including steps, distances from property lines and applicable overhead power or phone lines. The construction-detail form then asks about framing, supports, attachment, guards and stairs.

Use those as drawing categories, not as structural instructions from LSL. The document contains design details and span tables; this article does not determine which apply to your deck.

For a usable sheet index, give each drawing a name, revision date, preparer, submitted date and City response. If a review comment refers to an older sheet, reconcile the revision before ordering materials.

The deck application separately asks for the work type, materials, dimensions, area and project valuation. Make its dimensions agree with the drawings. It also distinguishes the owner’s signature from an authorized agent’s; ask Building which supporting authorization is needed.

Download both files through the City application index, rather than reusing the older deck PDF previously cited here. A 2026 upload path does not establish that every technical detail was newly enacted in 2026.

Separate five versions of “approved”

RecordWhat it establishes
Accepted applicationThe City received the package, not necessarily that review is complete
Plan-review approvalA stated drawing revision cleared the identified review
Issued permitThe described work may proceed under that permit’s terms
Passed inspectionThe identified field stage passed, not every later stage
Completion recordThe City recorded completion or closure for the stated scope

This is LSL’s document distinction, not a claim that the City uses these five exact status labels. Ask for the permit’s final status if the last visible record is only an inspection.

Put the permit dates beside the drawing revision

The Building FAQ says work must start within six months of issuance and finish within one year; it also describes requesting an extension in writing. Record the actual issue date and ask Building about any extension before relying on an expired schedule. Do not assume an inspection automatically renews a permit.

The FAQ requires the permit to be displayed visibly at the jobsite. If the field work differs from the approved drawing, obtain the City’s revision instructions and keep the response with the changed sheet.

Who submits matters too: the owner-versus-contractor guide explains the affidavit and current submission choices.

LSL checked the current application index, application, Building FAQ and the first four pages of the linked deck requirements on September 20, 2026. We preserved the approval-state comparison and added the drawing/application cross-check. We did not review the remaining span tables for engineering adequacy, design a deck, inspect a property or obtain a permit.
