A City of Medina deck submission needs a site plan and construction information. They answer different questions: where the deck sits on the lot, and what will be built there. The City’s combined application has separate zoning and building official signatures; completing the applicant section is not either approval.
Use the City application index to obtain the current packet. These instructions concern City of Medina properties, not every address with a Medina postal name.
Prepare the drawing set before completing the application
The deck application asks for two sets of plans, a scope and materials list, deck size and height, railing, stair and footing information, and whether the deck is attached or detached. It also requests a site plan with side and rear setbacks marked.
LSL’s preparation comparison separates three documents that should agree:
| Document | Information to reconcile |
|---|---|
| Application | Property and parcel, applicant/contractor, owner, scope, deck dimensions and attached/detached choice |
| Site drawing | Proposed deck location, its dimensions and distances to side and rear property lines |
| Construction drawings and worksheets | Deck shape, house and stair locations, materials, framing dimensions and connection/support information |
If the proposal shows one deck size and the site drawing another, resolve that difference before filing. A separate description for demolition, replacement or expansion also helps distinguish the work included in a price.
A parcel-map image is a starting point, not a boundary determination
The packet points to the County Auditor’s mapping resource and illustrates a deck location with measured distances. Those illustrated distances belong to the example; they are not a table of required setbacks for every lot.
Identify the source of your property-line information. Ask the City whether the proposed drawing is sufficient or whether a survey or other location evidence is needed. Include the actual stairs and projections when discussing the proposed footprint rather than assuming the deck platform alone resolves location review.
Find the worksheets by their printed page numbers
The wood-deck guide requests its printed pages 2 and 3 with the boxes completed. In the combined fifteen-page application PDF reviewed, these are physical PDF pages 5 and 6. The cover and introductory pages make the two numbering systems different.
Printed page 2 is the section/profile worksheet; printed page 3 is the plan drawing. They ask for project information and dimensions, not just a signature. Give the designer or contractor responsibility for completing the applicable details and reconciling them with the proposal.
The guide also contains structural tables and details with code references. This article does not calculate a span, choose a connection or certify that a generic detail suits an existing house. Confirm the applicable design and current requirements with the City and the project’s qualified professionals.
The applicant accepts responsibility for requesting inspections
That responsibility appears in the application signature statement. Before work starts, establish who will request the required inspections, which work must remain visible and how corrections will be handled. The reviewed preparation pages do not establish a universal inspection schedule.
Keep the accepted drawings and any approved revisions with the inspection results. Neither a contractor’s completion statement nor the application signature substitutes for the final status the City requires.
LSL checked the current City index, application and guide on September 20, 2026, including visual review of the combined packet’s first six pages. The worksheet comparison is an application-preparation aid, not structural design. The upload directory does not establish a March 1 publication date. No property, boundary, setback, fee or private permit was verified.
