In Vicksburg, a fence not over six feet is on the City’s building-permit exemption list. A fence above six feet and a deck take the permit-review route. The exemption answers the building-permit question; it does not locate your property line or establish where zoning allows the fence.
Sort the proposal before drawing the permit plans
| Proposed work | Published City route | What remains to establish |
|---|---|---|
| Fence no higher than six feet | Listed building-permit exemption | Zoning placement, boundary and any separate excavation/utility requirements |
| Fence above six feet | Building permit after plan approval | Actual height, construction details, location and valuation |
| Deck | Building permit after plan approval | Structure and site details needed for this particular design |
| Work combining a fence and deck | Classify both components | The fence exemption does not exempt the deck |
The first three distinctions come from the exemption list and fence/deck instructions. The combined-project row is LSL’s application of those separate categories, not a City determination about a private design.
Two questions to settle before installation
Ask the Zoning Administrator, at the fence page’s listed 601-638-6203, whether the proposed location is acceptable. Provide the address, proposed height and a drawing showing where the fence or deck would sit. An assumed boundary based on an existing fence is not a survey.
Then ask Building & Inspection at 601-634-4528 what plans and any separate digging or utility coordination apply. Its fence/deck page specifically warns that plan review can identify these additional steps. Do not treat permission for the structure as a utility locate or start digging on that assumption.
For work requiring a building permit, the City bases the charge on construction cost or project valuation; the page does not give a flat fence/deck fee. Obtain the project-specific amount with the permit requirements before accepting a quote that calls all permitting “included.”
