Tampa renovation cleanup starts with a classification decision, not a truck. A broken cabinet, an old sofa, a can of wet paint, and demolished drywall can come from the same room, but the City’s records do not send them to the same place.
Build a small load record before set-out or travel: photograph the material, write down where it came from, estimate the quantity, identify the vehicle, and confirm which solid-waste account serves the address. Then match each group below to a current destination.
Five material classes, three different routes

The distinctions come from the City’s Special Services list, McKay Bay Scalehouse rules, and household chemical collection route. “Curbside,” “drop-off,” and “free” are not synonyms.
Special Services is for bulky household material, not construction debris
The City reserves Special Services for active City refuse accounts at qualifying residential properties. Its accepted list includes common bulky household goods, but its excluded list names a wide range of project debris: building material, doors, roofing, drywall, lumber, tile, pipe, windows, brick and concrete among them.
That gives a useful decision test. Ask what the object was when discarded, not just what room it came from. A toilet is on the accepted bulky list; broken wall tile and pipe are on the excluded building-material list. A mattress can fit the service; pieces of a demolished partition do not become bulky household goods because they are bagged.
Preserve the City’s confirmation or appointment record with a photo of the prepared items. It will be more useful than a general note that “trash pickup was called.”
McKay Bay’s free-use test has several fields
McKay Bay does not publish one blanket “Tampa residents dump free” rule. Its Scalehouse record ties free qualification to an active City account, an eligible residential property, identification and proof in the same name, and waste originating at that account address. The page separately lists paid categories such as construction debris, commercial vehicles or waste, household garbage, mixed loads and carpet. It separately prohibits bricks, rocks, cinder blocks and dirt: these are not simply another paid construction category.
Its free yard-waste instructions require paper bags or bundles tied with jute twine, not plastic bags. It limits the listed free appliance route to two per visit. Those conditions differ from the curbside Special Services list; do not transfer preparation or quantity rules between them.
Before driving, record:
- the service address and name on the solid-waste account;
- the identification and account proof the current page requires;
- the material list and approximate amount;
- whether any part came from another property or contractor operation;
- the vehicle or trailer type; and
- the scalehouse’s same-day answer on acceptance and charges.
Do not use a prior free visit as proof that a different load qualifies. Source address, material, quantity and vehicle can change the result.
Keep chemicals and electronics out of the debris decision
The City routes eligible Tampa residents to Hillsborough County facilities for household chemicals and electronics. The City collection page and County paint and electronics guidance should be checked together for current identification, item, quantity and operating conditions.
The County directs electronics to Community Collection Centers, not HHW events. Paint can go to either eligible route. Its current page specifies five intact household electronic items per household per month, excluding listed accessories from that count, and ten one-gallon plus five five-gallon paint containers per household per month. It requires sealed, non-leaking paint containers and warns against stripped electronics. Check the exact destination rather than treating “County collection” as one universal site. County rules
Do not place a leaking, unlabeled or damaged container in a vehicle based on this article. Describe the condition to the responsible program and follow its instructions. Likewise, do not assume “dry” or “empty” changes a product’s classification without confirmation.
If the load is refused
Keep the material inventory and the facility’s specific reason, then obtain an accepted destination for that item. Do not leave rejected waste at a site or blend it into another load. A scale ticket, collection receipt or clear follow-up instruction is more useful than repeating the same pre-haul checklist.
