A Pinellas barrier-island emergency access permit helps verify residency after an evacuation. It does not decide when an island is safe to reopen. The Sheriff’s Office describes the credential process, while the County says law enforcement restricts access until conditions allow return. Permit instructions Recovery FAQ
Choose the right application route
Residential owners and renters or lessees can use the online route for eligible barrier-island properties. Commercial properties must apply in person at the relevant town or city hall. The Sheriff’s page limits residential permits to two per property address. Who can apply
Before starting, make a small preparation record:
- Whether the property is residential or commercial.
- The barrier-island municipality and property address.
- The applicant’s driver-license image and separate address evidence: the Sheriff lists a tax bill, mortgage, utility bill or current lease/rental agreement showing the requested property’s address.
- Whether the permit will be mailed or collected in person.
- The confirmation and any instructions for completing the request.
Keep identification in the official application channel, not in a public planning document. A mailing address somewhere in Pinellas does not establish that a property is in this barrier-island program.
The permits are free. Check that the property is in a community listed on the Sheriff’s page; the list includes named barrier-island communities and Tierra Verde, not all Pinellas addresses. For Tierra Verde pickup, the page names Fire Station 21, 540 Sands Point Drive South, and its contact table asks residents to call 727-864-6709 for an appointment. Other applicants should follow the municipality and pickup address in their confirmation. Eligibility and pickup locations
Keep request, issuance and collection separate
The Sheriff’s Office says every request is reviewed; applying does not guarantee issuance. For mailed permits, its three-business-day mailing statement follows completed processing and issuance. It is not a three-day application approval promise. Requests requiring in-person completion can be deleted if unfinished after two calendar weeks. Processing conditions
Record the actual issuance notice or pickup instructions instead of treating the first confirmation email as the permit itself.
Recheck access when a storm occurs
The County recovery FAQ says restrictions remain until safe, after which access may still be limited to residents and businesses with permits. Follow current official reopening directions; possession of a tag is not permission to cross a closed checkpoint.
The Sheriff describes nine barrier-island entry points, with access limited according to the entry point closest to the residence. Its instructions call for hanging the permit from the vehicle’s rearview mirror so officers can scan its barcode. Follow the current checkpoint directions rather than assuming the tag opens every approach. Checkpoint procedure
LSL rechecked the complete Sheriff permit instructions and County FAQ on September 21, 2026. This guide uses the FAQ’s re-entry boundary, not its broader medical, electrical or flood-repair advice. No identification was collected, permit application submitted or current evacuation, reopening or property-access determination verified.
