Altamonte Springs has one Building and Fire Safety department, but that does not make every building or fire project eligible for the same online permit. Start with the proposed system change and whether its plans have already been reviewed—not just the fact that the portal offers a permit button.
Does the limited online route fit the work?
The department’s permit list sets these distinctions:

“Fewer than” does not include exactly 20 devices or 30 heads. If the project falls outside a listed boundary, ask the department for the appropriate review route; do not split or relabel the work to fit the online choice. This table compares intake conditions, not technical design requirements.
Keep the plans and inspection request tied to the same scope
For the listed online fire-alarm and sprinkler permits, the City requires two sets of as-built drawings on site for inspection. An uploaded application does not itself supply those on-site sets.
Keep the parent building-permit number, any fire-system permit and the drawing revision together. When a scope changes, ask which reviewer needs the revised plan rather than treating a favorable result on one permit as approval of every system. The department also performs existing-occupancy fire inspections; a record of such a visit is not automatically the construction permit’s final result.
Plan-review work has a different submission route
The application instructions recommend hard-copy delivery or mail for work requiring plan review. They also accept PDFs on an unlocked, non-password-protected USB drive that the City retains, divided into application, licenses/workers’ compensation, plans and supporting documents.
That distinction matters before uploading a large plan set to a limited online permit. Confirm the required channel with Building and Fire Safety at 407-571-8446. The same page directs homeowner applicants to apply in person; this guide does not independently determine owner-builder eligibility or repeat the page’s apparent statutory-number error as law.
A missing account record may be a migration problem
The City calls its upgraded portal Civic Access and instructs existing users to create the new account with their original email address. Before creating a second identity or assuming a permit disappeared, follow that migration instruction and contact support if records do not appear.
