A pile left after a remodel is not automatically household bulk waste. In North Royalton, who generated the waste matters: the City’s service instructions make contractors responsible for removing waste from their work. Apartment and business waste—including home-business waste—is outside this City residential pickup service.
Choose the route before moving the pile
LSL combined the City rules with the Solid Waste District’s construction-material guidance. Start with origin, then identify the item.
| What you have | Route to resolve |
|---|---|
| Debris generated by a contractor | Arrange removal with that contractor; do not assume the household route will take it. |
| Your own construction or demolition debris | Check the District’s private-facility options; keep it out of the recycling cart. |
| Ordinary bulky household furniture | Check the City’s size and preparation instructions before the regular collection day. |
| A refrigerator, freezer or window air conditioner | Arrange the required advance collection contact; do not treat it as an ordinary loose item. |
| A large cleanout or uncertain mixed load | Describe the materials to the collector or receiving facility before choosing a route. |
The District classifies drywall, roofing, lumber and similar repair materials as construction debris. Its disposal directory provides possible destinations, not a promise that a facility accepts every mixed load.
Preparation can decide whether a bulk item is ready
The 2026 City guide specifies these selected checks:
- Refrigerant-containing appliances: contact the collector the day before the regular trash day.
- Refrigerators and freezers: remove doors as instructed by the City; arrange safe handling.
- Mattresses, box springs and upholstered seating: completely wrap and seal in plastic.
- Carpet, padding and large rugs: cut to four-foot lengths and tape into rolls.
- Loose wood: four-foot bundled lengths; bundles and bags must not exceed 50 pounds.
This is not the complete material list. Check the linked guide for an item not covered here. Do not dismantle equipment or move an item you cannot handle safely.
Before a private haul, ask these questions
The District’s trash-disposal page explains the fee-based transfer-station route and recommends asking a hired hauler for disposal tickets. LSL’s pre-haul question sheet is:
- Which materials are in the load, and are any prohibited or charged separately?
- What preparation, vehicle or unloading requirements apply?
- What will the facility charge, and how is that charge measured?
- If someone else hauls it, where will it go and what receipt will document delivery?
Record the receiving facility’s answer before loading. A City curbside instruction is not a private facility’s acceptance policy.
Collection timing and missed service
The City guide’s setout window runs from sunset before service day to 7 a.m. on service day. The City lists 800-828-8171 for its contracted collector; use that number for appliance arrangements, missed pickup or an uncertain setout. Check the live service page for changes.
Updated September 12, 2026. The broken 2025 PDF and generic evidence-ledger text were replaced with current City instructions and a disposal-route comparison. No hauler was interviewed, facility visited or particular load accepted as part of this review.
